Makeup Style Mini Quiz
Are You On The Right Track?

What are we talking about when we talk about makeup style?

If you do wear makeup, the way you wear it, how you express it, your level of (or lack of) imagination with it, is your makeup style....And it is part of the impression you make.

If you are going to bother with makeup, do so with some intention. Design it to work for you. Isn't that what it is for?

Good style is in harmony with other aspects about the person...and it is a believable extension/ expression of a personality.

Makeup That Is True To You

What will really take your makeup style to extraordinary is the harmony of it and your personality. Your makeup style needs to be believable, in tune with your personality and personal style. And then that makeup needs to be done well. Even the right hair cut is going to change your personal appeal. If you take note of celebrities with a lot of beauty appeal...it is more than great makeup that creates their beauty. It is their personal style, the way the wear their hair, the clothing choices and colors, even their accessories...in other words its the complete package, with elements of their style; makeup, hair, clothes, accessories, IN HARMONY, and working together to deliver that high impact beauty. So, how do get a makeup style truly working for you...one that is true to you.

Ask yourself this, what is your motivation when you wear makeup?

A. It is to solve a problem, such as really dark circle under your eyes that need concealer or cover a blemish.

B. You see it as a way to enhance your appearance.

C. It is a creative outlet, a place to really express yourself.

D. All of the above.

The Right Track

If you answered A., your approach to makeup is likely practical and your resulting style very natural and low key in appearance. If this is what you like, and it suits you and your comfort zone, great. I have some makeup style tips for you that will maximize your minimal approach, BELOW.

Now, if you answered B, C or D maximizing what a makeup style can do for you, gets a little more complicated because there are so many elements to consider. We all have different personalities, different tastes, different features to contend with.

Makeup style advice for B answers, begin by letting your comfort zone and personal style lead the way. Once you go through the process of defining your facial features and strategies that enhance them you are half way there ( ie. wide set narrow eyes, full lips, heart shaped face...if you haven't you can by clicking here make-up-tips). Now you need the end plan in mind...the 'look' you really like, and would like to see working on yourself. Great sources of inspiration are celebrity style and fashion magazines. For most of us there are usually certain makeup, hair and fashion styles that you gravitate towards and borrowing style elements from individuals who have been put together by beauty experts is an almost brilliant idea.

The key to successfully achieving these desired styles for yourself is 1. Recognizing the features you share and the ones you don't, and adopt ONLY what suits, compliments, enhances your features. 2. Remembering that these looks tend to be overdone because celebrities are often at an event or part of a fashion ad or editorial (keep it real). 3. Personalize the style to suit you (put your stamp on it, make it your own). 4. Your makeup style needs to flow with the other style elements, fit you, and polished.

If you answered C, you will have your own ideas on how you want to express your makeup style. Without knowing exactly what that style is, here are a few guide lines to consider:

  • Do you feel your style flatters you and your features? Is it a believable extension of your personality?
  • Does your style fit with the things you do, your lifestyle? If you have answered yes, you are likely in a satisfied place maybe just looking for new ideas to keep your style current.
If you have answered no, you need to take a few steps back and consider your features and makeup strategies to enhance them, and perhaps, examine the style(s) you like and how you can adapt them to yourself more effectively.

Getting your makeup style right even when its minimal...

Here are a few suggestions to get your makeup style really working for you and gain the maximum benefit from your approach to makeup.

When using:

  • Foundational Makeup, ie. foundation and concealer, make sure that the shades you are using are bang on. You will completely destroy the benefits of using makeup by choosing a miss match shade. Get in natural light with a mirror and ensure the shade disappears into your jaw line. The weight of the formulation should be as light and sheer as effectively possible (and still address your concerns).
  • Concealer comes in multi palette shades which can be custom blend for a perfect match (Laura Mercier' Secret Weapon is an excellent option).

  • Blush-Consider a really sheer blush like tarte cheek stain (Award winning and personal favorite blush-'blushing bride' plum shade works for a lot of skin tones). For oily skin, a powder blush in a very natural shade that gives the appearance of a natural flush (a browny rose shade works for a lot of skin tones).

  • Lip Balm- Moisture can have a little tint to it to create a natural looking flush in your lips.

Minimal Makeup Style cont...don't miss out on the great eye opening benefits of an eyelash curler, even if you don't wear mascara. Consider a natural lash mascara in a black brown for just a little bit of definition for your eyes. You will still look natural but your eyes will really brighten (Two inexpensive considerations; L'oreal lash Out Mascara is just one lengthening mascara that has a natural finish to it. Almay has a hypoallergenic one for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers).

You Can Do It Too

Invest this time into yourself and begin a process that will boost everything from the obvious, your beauty and your confidence, to the surprising, like your relationships with people at every level. When you feel you are operating at your best, amazing things can happen.
